KORKYT ATA is also called the “KUI ATASI” - the father of KUI. The word KUI is standing for a state – the state of a human soul. RAUSHAN ORAZBAEAVA is known for her very own interpretations of old KUIs, often originally written for Dombra. KUIs were traditionally passed on from generation to generation, from teacher to student, and only recently put into notation. They can express an emotional state, the character of an animal or an atmosphere in nature. For example the KUI “Aral Muny” from contemporary composer Aktoty Raimkylova expresses in a very touching way the pain and sadness about the ecological catastrophe of the Aral-Sea.
